Bound books are more than just the text. Books are works of art. Bringhurst will tell you all about that. If I print out my Great American Novel on inkjet paper, it looks terrible compared to a professionally typeset and bound book. Books are exercises in user experience. The smell of the pages, the margins, the binding, the crispness of the ink: it’s more than the sum of its parts.

The Kindle, Nook, and iBooks Store are plain-text nightmares. If Emily Brontë were alive today, “Thanks,” she’d say, “Thanks for copy-pasting my world-famous novel into an
epub
. Now it looks like garbage when people read it.”

Look at us. We’re holding tablet computers. We have the hardware buttons and the multitouch and the motion sensors, all the jazz. Get that plain-text horseshit out of here.

How about textbooks you can actually interact with? I want to see more of figure 1, rotate it, maybe take an interactive quiz on it after a few pages. I want a lecture I can remember because I was hit from all sides by text, video, images, and sounds. How about a childrens’ book they can experience, not just read?

These companies? They get it. Plain text is out, building an experience is in. The future of reading is not cramming 10,000 text documents under an eInk display.

Huffington Post has a 3 minute montage of reporters screwing up US President Obama’s name with Osama bin Laden’s:

But the good news, as far as the media is concerned, is that they’ll probably never ever have to spend as breakneck a period of time on a story that involved both Barack Obama and Osama bin Laden. So never again will there be a night when so many on-air talking heads confuse the president’s name with the terrorist’s.
